… we heard what Tiger Woods had to say in his “news conference” later this morning. The idea that the networks are covering that event live is so absurd it makes the Olympics look serious. America’s not too wrapped up in its sports idiocy, is it? Oh, no. We wouldn’t want anyone to think that there’s nothing so important for the nation to hear on live TV as the self-serving excuses of a sex addict who make billions from losing golf games.
The tidbit is from last Friday when it was reported that the five largest health insurance companies had a 58% increase in profits in 2009 while they covered 2.7 million fewer people. If nothing shows that medical care and insurance is outside the usual patterns of business and that free market models just won’t work for health care, we’re not sure what will. Apparently the only way to make money in the health insurance business is to provide less insurance to people. The only company with decreasing profits in 2009 was Aetna and they took on 1.2 million more customers. See? When health insurance companies insure people they lose money and when they don’t insure people, they make money. And then, after they double their profits in one year, they raise rates on the rest of their bothersome customers as much as 40%. This will make even more people uninsured and thus raise their profits even higher in 2010. There’s the free market for you. Feel better yet?

We’ll leave you with a quick Olympic moment. How about that New Hampshire er who got bagged by a photo of a girl kissing his bronze medal while it was draped in front of his crotch? The Olympic poobahs were shocked, just shocked that anyone who was that reckless and bereft of inhibitions while might not be equally so in celebration of victory. What did they think these immature young men, pursued by snow groupies, did in their spare time? Perhaps they crochet snoods for their less-fortunate athletic comrades. No, everyone wants the ratings and money from these X- Game, near-death competitions but none of the frat party aftermath. Sorry guys, it don’t work that way. You can’t have people risk their lives for your entertainment and profit without decadence at the survivors’ party. Not at their age, anyway. Geez, we hate winter. This in like a lion, out like a lamb thing better work this year.
